Peter Beaton (SN 326), originally from Windermere, was a 26 year old farmer and wool cleaner living in Sturt Street Ballarat when he enlisted on September 15th 1915. Two months later, on November 12th, he sailed from Australia on the Orsova. His time on the farm had obviously developed his horse handling skills and, on arrival in Egypt, he joined the 1st Australian Remount Unit. His military career however was relatively short because, by October 1916, it was decided that he should return to Australia. He returned to Melbourne on the Vestalia and was discharged soon afterwards as ‘medically unfit – defective vision’. He died in January 1923 at the age of 35.
