James Alfred O'Donnell was a 21 year old station hand when he enlisted on the 22nd of August 1914. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A27 Southern on the 20th of October 1914.
On the 12th of August 1918 he was wounded slightly in action, but remained at duty.
James returned to Australia on the 29th of December 1918 and was discharged on the 27th of February 1919 due to the termination of his enlistment period.
James was awarded the Military Medal at an unspecified date for work near Rosieres on the 11th of August 1918.
