John Daly (SN 1913) born in Ballarat, was a 32 year old married labourer when he enlisted in Ballarat on June 19th 1915. He embarked aboard the Anchises on August 26th and in April 1916 he was deployed to France with the 21st Infantry Battalion. His service there did not start well as he was charged with drunkenness and using obscene language. In August 1916 he was listed as missing in action but it was subsequently found that he had been taken prisoner at Mouquet Farm on August 26th. He was imprisoned first at Dulmen and then at Burgsteinfurt in Germany. With the signing of the Armistice he was repatriated to England, where he arrived on December 5th 1918. He returned to Australia aboard the Nevasa, disembarked at Melbourne on Anzac Day 1919 and was discharged shortly after.
