Robert William Charles (SN 1685) was born in Ballarat and educated at the Cardigan State School. He was a 44-year-old farmer when he enlisted on May 14th 1915. He left Australia aboard the Demosthenes on July 16th and served at Gallipoli with the 22nd Battalion from September until the evacuation in December. In March 1916 he reached France and the following January he was transferred to the 2nd Division Salvage Company. On September 16th 1917 he was killed in action in the Battle of Menin Road and buried in the Ramparts Cemetery in Ypres, Belgium. He was 46 years of age.
