Robert William Charles was 44 years old, married with three children, and a farmer living in Geelong when he enlisted on 14th May 1915. He was born in Ballarat. He was posted to 23rd Infantry Battalion, with Regimental No. 1685. In France he was transferred to the 2nd Division Salvage Company . He was killed in action 16th September 1917, in the vicinity of Menin Road in Flanders, Belgium. He is buried in the Ramparts Cemetery, Lille Gate, Ypres, Belgium.
