Harry Jerram (SN 247) was born in Beechworth but was employed in Ballarat as a mechanical engineer when he enlisted there on 19th August 1914 at the age of 19. He embarked for overseas service with the 8th Battalion from Melbourne in October aboard the Benalla. His war record contains no details of the first year of his overseas service but it is likely that he served at Gallipoli with the 8th Battalion. In August 1915, he was appointed Driver while serving in Egypt, before being posted to France in March 1916. He seems to have survived the war relatively unscathed with admissions to hospital for scarlet fever while serving in Egypt, his only recorded health issues. He returned to Australia aboard the Havre in October 1918 and was discharged on 21st February 1919.
His brothers Reginald and Leonard also served in the AIF and are honoured with trees in the Avenue.
