William Henry Pollock was born in Monaghan, Ireland and was a Draper when he enlisted in the 39th Battalion, B Company on 1 February 1916 at the age of 21. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on 27 May 1916. On 5 March 1917 he was transferred from the field to Hospital sick. He was promoted to Corporal on 3 November 1917 and to Sergeant on 20 June 1918. In April of 1919, while in France, he suffered from tonsillitis, which saw that he would return home to Australia aboard the Orita from England on 23 June 1919.
