Thomas McCartney was a single 23 year old farmer at the time of his enlistment in Ballarat on the 17th of July 1915. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A40 Ceramic on the 23rd of November 1915. Thomas returned to Australia on the 2nd of July 1919, and was discharged due to the termination of his enlistment period on the 24th of August 1919.
