Biography

William Edward Mitchell (SN 2414) was born at Smeaton where he attended the local state school. He enlisted in Ballarat, at the age of 29, on October 4th 1916 and was single and employed as a labourer. He was posted to the 39th Battalion, 4th Reinforcements, and embarked on October 20th aboard the Port Lincoln. He was killed in action in Belgium on August 4th 1917. He has no known grave, but he is commemorated at the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial, Belgium.
