Biography

Thomas Stanley Barnett (SN 40) was amongst the first to enlist, signing up on August 19th 1914. At the time he was a 21 year old salesman from Hotham Street Ballarat. He was attached to the 2nd Field Ambulance and sailed from Melbourne aboard the Wiltshire on October 19th. After further training in Egypt he was part of the historic Gallipoli landing on April 25th 1915. In mid-May he was wounded in action, suffering a shrapnel wound to the back and was evacuated to hospital in Egypt where a 'shrapnel bullet' was surgically removed. His back was weakened as a consequence so it was decided he should return to Australia. On August 15th 1915 he sailed from Suez on the Themistocles, and reached Melbourne on September 9th. Soon after, he was discharged as ‘medically unfit’. He died in April 1933.
