Biography

Walter George Pollock (SN 1897) was born in Miners Rest where he attended the local state school. At the age of 27, the unmarried labourer enlisted in Ballarat on April 27th 1916. He embarked for the Western Front in August on board the Orontes, to serve with the 39th Infantry Battalion. He spent a month training in England before moving to France in November. On June 8th 1917 he was killed in action near Messines. With no known grave, his name is on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres. Belgium.
