Sydney Smith was born in Ballarat, Victoria, was single and a Horticulturist when he enlisted with the 23rd Battalion, 6th Reinforcement on 13 July 1915 at the age of 29. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on 27 October 1915. The first two years of service passed without major incident, illness or injury, but he was transferred to hospital as sick on 9 February 1917 whist serving in France. Later that year he would suffer gas poisoning and return to hospital on 24 October, returning to his unit the following month and receiving a promotion to Bombardier in the New Year (1918). His actions would award him another promotion to Corporal and near the end of the war, on 18 September 1918, he was promoted again to Sergeant. He returned home to Australia on 13 April 1919.
