Biography

Andrew Quirk (SN 2749) was born at Burrumbeet where he attended the local state school. He was a 29 year old railway porter at Burrumbeet when he enlisted in Melbourne on September 12th 1915. He was posted to the 24th Infantry Battalion and embarked from Melbourne in late October on board the Ulysses . He arrived in France in March 1916 and suffered a gunshot wound to his left thigh during action at Pozieres at the end of July. He was transferred to the No 13 General Hospital in Boulogne but died of his wounds on August 12th 1916. He is buried in the Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, France.
