Herbert Frederick Ottaway was born in Ballarat and was a Clerk when he enlisted in the 3rd Light Horse 'B' Squadron on 24 August 1914. His unit embarked from Adelaide on the Port Lincoln on 22 October 1914. He was admitted in Malta to hospital as sick on 16 August 1915 for septic knee. Later he marched into HQrs Bhurtpore from No 1 Com Depot Perham on 6 January 1917. He received a promotion to 2nd Lieutenant on 22 June 1918 before embarking home for Australia aboard the Kiser-A-Hind on 8 October 1918.
