Biography

John William Holt was born in Bishop Auckland England and was a Steward by trade when he enlisted from Ballarat in the 14th Battalion, B Company on 17 November 1914 at the age of 21. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board Transport A38 Ulysses on 22 December 1914. He trained further in Egypt, then moved to Mudros in early April ahead of the April 25th Gallipoli landing. He served on Gallipoli until mid-June when he was evacuated to the No.2 Stationary Hospital at Mudros. The following month he was transferred to hospital at Alexandria suffering from enteric fever. Once well enough to travel he was returned to Australia on the Ascanius and disembarked at Melbourne on October 4th 1915.
