William Charles Smith was born in Ballarat and was a Printer by trade when he enlisted in the 14th Battalion, 9th Reinforcement on 21 June 1915 at the age of 20. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A20 Hororata on 27 September 1915. In June 1916 he was deployed to France with the 14th Battalion, but was wounded in action on August 8th. He sustained a severe gunshot wound to his right thigh which caused first, his evacuation to England, and then his return to Australia. He returned home on the Karoola, disembarking at Melbourne in early December 1916. In April 1917 he was discharged as medically unfit.
