Biography

David Retallick was born in Lexton, VIC, was single and working as a Shearer in Ballarat when he enlisted in the 9th Light Horse Regiment, 1st Reinforcement on 16 December 1914 at the age of 23. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A52 Surada on 6 February 1915. During his tour with the 9th he received multiple promotions, eventually achieving the rank of Sergeant on 31 December 1918. According to his official record, other than being reprimanded for being in Jerusalem without a pass (and visiting a house of ill repute) he completed his tour without major incident, illness or injury. He returned to Australia and was given a full discharge on 8 February 1920.
