Biography

Ellis Norman Allan (SN 393) from Mair Street in Ballarat, was a 21 year old sawyer when he enlisted at Fremantle on September 8th 1914. He embarked aboard the Ascanius with the first ANZAC fleet on October 31st first to Egypt and then to Gallipoli with the 11th Battalion. After Gallipoli he reached France in April 1916 where he suffered shell shock during fighting in July. In November 1916 he was hospitalised again suffering from bronchitis and influenza and was unable to rejoin his unit until April 1917. On September 21st 1917 he suffered a severe gunshot wound to his back and died of his wounds the following day. He was 24 years of age and was buried at The Huts Cemetery in Belgium.
