Biography

William Robert Gilligan (SN 14573) was born in Queenscliff but grew up in Alfredton and attended the Alfredton State School. He enlisted in Ballarat on July 26th 1915. He was 19 years old, single and a printer. He was posted to the 10th Australian Field Ambulance and left Australia in September.
He was fatally wounded near Passchendaele on October 20th 1917, and is buried in the Nine Elms British Cemetery, Belgium. He was 21 years of age.
His brother John also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
