Biography

Herbert Hamilton Parker was born in Ballarat and was a Miner when he enlisted in the 8th Light Horse Regiment, C Squadron on 16 September 1914 at the age of 27. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board Transport A16 Star of Victoria on 25 February 1915. He was admitted to hospital for illness on several occasions, including for bronchitis and rheumatism before embarking to Malta aboard the HS Karos with fever on 16 October 1915. He recovered and marched out to Serapeum on 26 February 1916. On 22 January 1917 he suffered an accidental self-inflicted injury to his left hand. However, the wound was severe enough to sever the digital nerves in his left hand, resulting in his receiving a medical discharge. He returned to Australia 22 January 1917
