Biography

William Robert George James Watkins (SN 3233) born in Ballarat, was a 19 year old tailor when he enlisted at Ballarat on March 15th 1915. He embarked aboard the Ulysses on May 10th and saw the latter weeks of the Gallipoli campaign with the 22nd Infantry Battalion. He was then transferred to the 6th Field Ambulance and reached France in late March 1916. In May 1918 he was wounded in action, gassed, and evacuated to England. At war’s end he returned to Australia aboard the Kashmir, disembarked at Melbourne on April 30th 1919 and was discharged on August 17th.
