Henry Howell (SN 26802) born in England, was a married 30 year old fitter when he enlisted in Melbourne on April 10th 1915. He embarked aboard the Port Sydney on September 7th and sailed to England. As a driver with the 3rd Division Ammunition Column, he crossed to France in October 1917. During his service, which included a transfer to the 1st D.A.C., he experienced some illness problems, but he avoided battle wounds. He returned to Australia aboard the City of Exeter, disembarked at Melbourne on August 24th 1919 and was discharged on October 8th.
Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Harry Howell.
