Lionel Victor Wilson (SN 2923) born in Ballarat, was an 18 year old carpenter when he enlisted in Ballarat on June 29th 1915. On September 10th he embarked aboard the Star of Victoria, first to Egypt and then on to France for service with the 58th Infantry Battalion. In November 1916 he was evacuated to England suffering from trench feet and a gunshot wound to his left hand. He rejoined his unit in France and in March 1917 he was transferred to the 65th Battalion for six months, rejoining the 58th Battalion in September. At war’s end he returned to Australia on the Port Macquarie, disembarked on May 26th 1919 and was discharged on July 18th. He also enlisted to serve during World War 2 with service number V357849.
Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Victor L. Wilson.
