Biography

Leslie Ellis Montague MM (SN 321) born in Ballarat, was a 19 year old grocer when he enlisted on June 2nd 1915. On July 17th he embarked aboard the Orsova and sailed to Egypt. Assigned to the 36th Siege Brigade, he was moved to France in March 1916. In 1917 his gallantry in the field earned him a Military Medal before he was transferred to the Signal Corps. In May 1918 he was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant and in August he was promoted to lieutenant. He returned to Australia aboard the Medic, disembarked at Melbourne on May 31st 1919 and his appointment was terminated on July 30th. He also enlisted to serve during WW2 with service number VX108268.
