Biography

Frank Burt (SN 2025) was at first rejected on account of his chest measurement, but succeeded in enlisting, as an 18 year old labourer from Ripon Street Ballarat, on March 10th 1916. He trained at Langwarrin before embarking from Melbourne aboard the Port Lincoln on May 4th 1916. In November 1916, after a bout of conjunctivitis, he joined the 58th Battalion in France. While he avoided battle wounds, his period of service was not without its problems. He was twice charged with being absent without leave as well as ‘refusing to obey an order given by a superior officer’ and allowing a prisoner to escape. In late 1918, like many other service men, he was hospitalised with influenza. He returned to Australia on the Orontes, disembarking at Melbourne on June 28th 1919. He died in August 1962 at the age of 65.
