Biography

Walter Lawrence Chibnall (SN 149A) was born in Ballarat and educated at the Dana Street State School. He was a 20-year-old shop assistant when he enlisted on January 18th 1915. He trained with the Light Horse before embarking aboard the Persic on May 28th 1915. He served with the 13th Light Horse Regiment in Egypt before moving to France in May 1916 and transferring to the 1st Anzac Mounted Regiment. In May 1918 he changed unit once more, transferring to the 24th Battalion. On August 19th he was severely wounded while fighting near Amiens and died of his wounds the following day. He was 23 years of age and was buried in the Daours Communal Cemetery Extension, France. He is remembered on the honour board of the Dana Street State School.
