Albert Smith (SN 208) born at Ballarat, was a 22 year old cab driver when he enlisted on August 19th 1914. Assigned to the 2nd Field Ambulance he embarked from Melbourne aboard the Wiltshire on October 20th. He arrived in Gallipoli in April 1915 and proceeded to France in March 1916. His service was interrupted by health issues including appendicitis. He married Iris Aldwich in England on April 4th 1917. In February 1918 he was transferred to the 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital and in November he was granted '1914 leave' where he remained in England. He returned to Australia with Iris on the Wandilla on May 19th 1919 and was discharged on June 9th.

His brother Thomas also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
