Edward Thomas Roberts was born in Melbourne and was a Blacksmith by trade when he enlisted from Ballarat in the Army Service Corps 18, Reinforcement 2 on 14 July 1915 at the age of 23. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A19 Afric on 31 December 1915. He spent six months in Egypt before moving on to France in June 1916 and it seems he served out the war without serious wounds or illness. He returned to Australia on the Orita, disembarking at Melbourne on August 6th 1919.
