Biography

Leonard Ross Reid (SN 7949 / Lt) was born in Avoca but was working as an accountant at the Bank of Victoria in Ballarat when he enlisted on July 20th 1915. The 29 year old was assigned to the 18th Company, Australian Army Service Corps, with the rank of Corporal. His unit embarked from Melbourne on board the Bakara in November. The first six months of his overseas service was spent in Egypt, during which time he was promoted to Sergeant. He then served in France until September 1917 when he was selected for officer training. Promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in October, he was transferred to the 10th, then the 29th A.A.S.C. He appears to have suffered an injury in the early part of 1918 and was flagged for return to Australia because of a displaced cartilage in his left knee. He returned to Australia in April and his commission was terminated on August 25th 1918.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Len R. Reid.
