Born in Ballarat, William Grinlay Lawrie was a single 29 year old carpenter at the time of his enlistment on the 6th of July 1915. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A41 Bakara on the 5th of November 1915.
On the 16th of October 1915 William was promoted to Staff Sergeant.
He returned to Australia on the 20th of February 1920, and was discharged on the 21st of April 1920.
