Harold Joseph Reid was born in Ballarat, was single and working as a Labourer when he enlisted in the Infantry Brigade Train 8 on 8 July 1915 at the age of 22. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A41 Bakara on 5 November 1915. According to his official records, aside from being hospitalised for illness in June 1917, he completed his tour of duty without major incident, illness or injury, returning to Australia on 8 may 1919.
