Biography

Alfred John Bremer (SN 2339) attended Ballarat College and was a 22-year-old bank clerk when he enlisted on June 1st 1915. He was posted to the 13th Battalion and embarked from Sydney aboard the Shropshire on August 20th. Scabies caused him to be hospitalised in Egypt before he could move on to England where he was hospitalised again with influenza. He transferred to the 45th Battalion and reached France in September 1916. His service continued to be plagued by ill-health and he was evacuated to hospital in England in March 1917 suffering from gastric influenza. Health issues prevented his return to the battlefield and eventually it was decided he should be repatriated to Australia. He returned aboard the Kanowna, disembarking on March 7th 1919. A month later, on April 7th, he died of anterior polio myelitis. He was 26 years of age and is buried in the Ballarat New Cemetery. He is also remembered on the honour board at Ballarat College.
