Biography

John William George Horgan (SN 152) was born at Ballarat where he attended the Macarthur Street State School. He was 20 years old, single and a labourer when he enlisted on August 20th 1914. He was assigned to the 8th Infantry Battalion and sailed from Melbourne in October on board the Benalla. He took part in the historic April 25th Gallipoli landing, but influenza forced his evacuation to Lemnos in September. He served for a time with the 1st Anzac Cyclist Battalion reaching France in June 1916 . In October 1917 he returned to the 8th Battalion and on August 11th 1918 he was killed in action during the fighting near Lihons. He has no known grave and his name is recorded on Australian Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France.
