Sydney Llewellyn Smyth (SN 626) born in Ballarat, was a 22 year old brewer when he enlisted in Melbourne on February 18th 1915. On June 25th he embarked from Sydney aboard the Ceramic as a reinforcement for the 13th Light Horse Regiment. He saw action at Gallipoli for the final month of that campaign before moving to France in May 1916. In July he was transferred to the 1st Anzac Cyclist Battalion but in October 1916 he was evacuated to hospital in England suffering from influenza and gastritis. He was assessed as unfit for further active service and was returned to Australia, reaching Melbourne on July 21st 1917 and being discharged on December 3rd 1917.
