Biography

Rupert James Rosewall (SN 4575) was born in Ballarat and was a 24 year old blacksmith when he enlisted in Ballarat on September 17th 1915. Attached to the 8th Infantry Battalion he left Melbourne aboard the Themistocles on January 28th 1916 and sailed to Egypt. While there he was transferred to the 58th Battalion in April then in July 1916 he was transferred to the 15th Brigade Headquarters in France. His record shows he came through the war without any major illness or wounds. He returned to Australia aboard the Karmala, disembarking at Melbourne on August 17th 1919. He was discharged on October 10th 1919.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Rupert J. Rosewell.
