Biography

Roland Henry Fry (SN 187) born at Ballarat, was a 19 year old labourer when he enlisted in Ballarat on March 17th 1915. Assigned to the 24th Infantry Battalion he embarked on May 8th to Egypt and then to Gallipoli where he landed on August 30th. He served at Gallipoli until the evacuation and then in France. He was wounded in the chest in August 1916 and suffered trench feet in November 1917. In May 1918 he suffered a severe gunshot wound to his arm that ultimately required its amputation. He was returned to Australia on the Runic, disembarked at Melbourne on November 26th 1918 and was discharged on March 28th 1920.
