Gordon Reynolds (SN 1581) born in Ararat, was a 21 year old labourer when he enlisted in Melbourne on December 18th 1914. He embarked aboard the Runic on February 19th 1915 and sailed to Albany in Western Australia where he deserted on March 5th. His service record notes that ‘nothing further is known of this man’. Gordon Talbot (SN 4557) enlisted on February 4th 1916 and embarked aboard the Orontes on March 29th and reached France in September to serve with the 22nd Infantry Battalion. In October 1917 he faced several serious discipline charges, then on November 10th 1918, the day before the Armistice was signed, he revealed that his true name was Gordon Reynolds. He returned to Australia aboard the Wiltshire but his service record notes that he became an illegal absentee at Cape Town. His record also notes that he disembarked at Melbourne on August 19th 1919 and was discharged on October 11th.
