Robert Swanson was born in Ballarat, Victoria, was single and a Labourer when he enlisted with the 24th Battalion, A Company on 15 March 1915 at the age of 22. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A14 Euripides on 10 May 1915. His tour of duty was cut short due to a bout with Enteric Fever on November 12 1915 and returned to Australia a month later on 14 December 1915.
