Arthur John Leslie Hortin (SN 1770) was born at Tallangatta and was a 20 year old labourer when he enlisted in Melbourne on April 29th 1915. He embarked for active service a couple of months later, attached to the 22nd Battalion. His first action was on June 28th 1916 when he took part in a raid on German trenches in France. In October 1916 he was mentioned in despatches for excellent service and by January 1917 he had risen to the rank of Company Sergeant Major. During his service he was wounded in action on three different occasions but survived the war. He returned to Australia on the Ceramic and was discharged on May 15th 1919.
Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Arthur J. L. Horton.
