William Campbell (SN 1691), originally from Clunes, was a 19 year old gas fitter when he enlisted in Ballarat on May 6th 1915. He served initially with the 23rd Battalion before transferring to the 22nd Battalion with whom he was serving when he was killed in action at Pozieres on August 15th 1916. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Australian Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux and on the honour board of the Queen Street State School in Ballarat.
