Biography

John Bowhay Ware (SN 1474), born at Ballarat, was a 23 year old clerical assistant when he enlisted in Ballarat on June 29th 1915. On October 16th he embarked aboard the Port Lincoln and sailed to Egypt for service with the 1st Division Signals Company. In late March 1916 he was moved to France where, in his early months he was troubled by influenza and trench fever. In September 1916 he was transferred to the Australian Postal Corps based in England. In September 1918 he married Jeanette Moore in London. At war’s end he returned to Australia aboard the Main, disembarked at Melbourne on October 11th 1919 and was discharged on December 10th.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as John V. Ware.
