James Hutchinson (SN 3839) was Ballarat born and attended the Golden Point State School. He enlisted on September 20th 1915 at which time he was 19 years old, single and working as a labourer. He joined the 24th Infantry Battalion and embarked for the battle front in February 1916 on board the Afric, arriving in France at the end of March. He was killed in action at Pozieres on August 5th 1916. He has no known grave and his name is recorded on the Australian Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France.
