Biography

Francis Joseph Murphy (SN 1075/ Lt.) born at Willaura, was a 25 year old clerk when he joined the AIF as a sergeant on June 3rd 1915. He embarked the following day attached to the 3rd Division Signals Corps. On August 21st he was wounded in action at Gallipoli and evacuated to hospital in England. Once recovered, he was returned to Egypt before deployment to France in June 1916. While progressing through several promotions, he was assigned responsibilities in both England and France before being commissioned as an officer in November 1917. At wars end he returned to Australia as sports officer aboard the Orca, disembarking on April 7th 1919 His appointment was terminated on June 6th 1919.
