Biography

William John Paterson was born in Warrnambool, VIC and was a Technical School Teacher in Ballarat by trade when he enlisted in the 39th Battalion, 4th Reinforcement on 6 July 1915 at the age of 28. Due to his previous military service with the 71st Infantry he enlisted as a 2nd Lieutenant.

Two months later he was promoted to Lieutenant. In June 1918 he was admitted to hospital suffering from pericarditis. He did not return to the battle front and was invalided to Australia, æmedically unfit', by the time the Armistice was signed. After the war he took up residence at 1002 Mair Street in Ballarat.
