Biography

Samuel Abijah Martin (SN 3865) was born in Reading, UK, but enlisted at Ballarat on July 8th 1915. Married and 35 years old, he was employed as a tailor's cutter. He was accepted into the 21st Infantry Battalion and left Melbourne in February 1916 on board the Warilda. He arrived in France towards the end of March, but a couple of sprained ankles prevented him from joining his unit in action until early August. Less than a month later, on 1st September 1916, he died of wounds received in the fighting at Mouquet Farm and is buried at St Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France.
