Harry Cyril Bastow (SN 373) was a 22 year old blacksmith from Clyde Street in Ballarat North when he enlisted in August 1914. He embarked on the Wiltshire in October 1914 and served at Gallipoli with the 4th Light Horse Regiment until jaundice caused his evacuation to hospital on Malta. While there he was charged with being drunk and causing a disturbance. In May 1916 he joined the 2nd ANZAC Mounted Regiment in France, then in June 1917 he transferred to the 8th Battalion with whom he was serving when he was killed in action at Broodseinde Ridge on October 4th 1917. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Menin Gate at Ieper (Ypres) in Belgium.
