Biography

William Andrew (SN 4647) was born at Daylesford and was a 33 year old married labourer when he enlisted in Ballarat on July 19th 1915. Posted to the 14th Battalion he embarked from Melbourne on the Ballarat on February 18th 1916. During his service he was wounded on four different occasions, his wounds ranging from a gunshot wound to his foot, being gassed and shell shock. In June 1918 he was evacuated to hospital at Bath in England where he was diagnosed as suffering from cerebral concussion and deafness. He was returned to Australia aboard the Sardinia and was discharged on February 23rd 1919 ‘medically unfit, shell shock’.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as William Andrews.
