Joseph Quinlan was born in Ballarat but enlisted from Ballarat East as a commission agent on 17th July 1915. He was 31 years old, and single. He was drafted to the Cyclist Training Battalion, and was transferred 5th Infantry Battalion. His Regimental No. was 4911. On the 12th July 1918 he was killed in an artillery barrage. He is buried in La Kruele Military Cemetery, Hazebrouck, France.
