William Joseph Paine enlisted in Melbourne, Victoria at the age of 21 on the 14th of July 1915. He had been born in Ballarat, Victoria, was single, and was employed as a Grocer. He volunteered and was stationed with the 23rd Battalion, 4th Reinforcement with the Regimental number 2212. He was discharged and Returned to Australia on the 24th of December 1918.
Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as William J. Payne.
