Biography

Richard Maxwell (SN 2726) was born in Ballarat and attended the Urquhart Street State School. He was a single blacksmith of 22 years of age when he enlisted on July 14th 1915. Posted to the 22nd Infantry Battalion, he embarked from Melbourne on board the Ulysses in late October. While in Egypt he was transferred to the 58th Battalion before moving to France in June 1916. On July 21st 1916, he died of wounds received in the tragic charge at Fromelles. He is buried in Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
