Biography

Frederick Charles Nolan (SN 4279) born in Ballarat was a married 29 year old when he enlisted in Melbourne on July 15th 1915. Assigned to the 6th Infantry Battalion he embarked aboard the Demosthenes on December 29th and in April 1916 he came ashore in France. A few months later he was disciplined for being improperly dressed in Rouen on July 25th. Later in the year his service was impacted by illnesses, particularly bronchitis and influenza. In December 1917 it was trench fever that forced him to hospital and the decision that he needed to return to Australia. He came home on the Boonah, disembarked at Melbourne on September 20th 1918 and was discharged ‘medically unfit’ on December 12th.

His brother William also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
